Are there distribution patterns and population structure differences among demersal fish species in relation to Antarctic benthic communities? A case study in the Weddell Sea

Abstract Despite the general belief that Southern Ocean harbors low fish biodiversity, Weddell Sea hosts one of richest communities in region. Parallelly, is also known for presence dense and diverse macrobenthos. Most macrobenthic invertebrates, such as gorgonians, sponges bryozoans, are considered ecosystem engineers they generate a three-dimensional structure increases habitat heterogeneity. This structural complexity serves refuge against predators well nursery ground many organisms, including species. By analyzing video transects recorded by Remotely Operated Vehicle, we investigated density, spatial distribution size-frequency populations demersal species inhabiting southernmost part Sea. We attempted to unveil whether there any relationship between benthic substrate, some behavioral patterns. The dominance juveniles surveyed assemblages provides evidence that, at this life stage, appear be positively associated with complex conformed gorgonians which more common sand matrix sparse rocks substrates. Moreover, about 37% all specimens were resting on invertebrates or using them hide, implying Antarctic might offer suitable habitat. As such, it can concluded was an apparent certain different communities, yet exact triggers and/or factors behind association remain partially elusive.
